Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the prefecture Lassithi. It’s a picturesque harbor town, located at the beautiful Mirabello Bay. It has a ferryboat harbor with destination to the mainland and to other islands and a marina for sailing boats and yachts.
In the centre is a small fresh water lake, connected by a channel with the sea. The lake is known as little bit mysterious and often it is mentioned as a bottomless lake. Professional divers could proof some years ago that it’s approx. 60 m deep.
Around the lake the visitors can enjoy the unique atmosphere having a drink or a dinner in one of the plenty restaurants and cafeterias. The centre is also a paradise for shopping. Accommodations are as well in the town as in the surrounded regions towards Elounda and along the Mirabello Bay. From Agios Nikolaos it’s easy to explore the whole eastern part of Crete, making day trips to the south coast to Ierapetra or the fare east to Sitia, the palm beach of Vai and Kato Zakros. To the Lassithi plateau or to Heraklion it is not more than 1 hour drive.
Several agencies offer daily boat trips to the Island of Spinalonga which is nearby, outside of Elounda.
